Introduction

The Wetlands Nature Reserve is a culmination of several years of planning, design and construction, with two main principles reasons.  To act as natural flood defence mechanism and to create a new and diverse natural habitat, for all to enjoy.

The Wetlands covers a 6.1 hectare site, bordered by the River Cam to the east and the London - Cambridge railway line to the west.

In the early stages a Management Plan  was produced (see here for the management plan objectives) through cooperation between Cambridgeshire Wildlife Trust, Cambridge Green Belt Project and the Wellcome Trust, to ensure appropriate ongoing management, monitoring and conservation for the Wetlands Nature Reserve.

A Community Conservation Group was set up in the Spring of 2004 and is composed of representatives from Hinxton and Ickleton villages, along with member of the Genome Campus staff and is chaired by the Wellcome Trust.

The Reserve consists of a mix of habitats, including naturally filled ponds, wet grassland, wet woodland, riverbank habitats, shrubs and individual specimen trees. The creation of these areas will help contribute to local wildlife targets for the county as a whole.
